Revelers reached a frenzied crescendo on the dance floor, moved by a soundtrack that steered decidedly to non-Buffett waters. We sailed on Margaritaville at Sea Paradise's one-night inaugural voyage out of West Palm Beach and here are our first impressions of the Jimmy Buffett-inspired vessel. Margaritaville at Sea is an exciting new cruise line currently featuring two ships, the Islander and the Paradise. The Paradise is currently sailing and the Islander is scheduled to make its inaugural voyage in June 2024. For those people that don’t have to have the biggest and newest on their cruise, but instead enjoy sailing for the atmosphere and the relaxation that comes with being on the ship, it could be ideal.

If you book a package through the ship, transfers from the port in Freeport to the resort and back again are included in your fare. If you choose this option, note that you'll have to have a passport, and not just a birth certificate. That being said, on a cruise this short, where you're in port for one of the two days, you're not spending much time in your room anyway. Which is good, because only 10 rooms on the entire ship come with a balcony. Even junior suites only have portholes; you have to book a Grand Terrace Suite if you want outdoor real estate. Another area where the ship seems dated is in its utilities; the renovation did not add the number of American outlets and USB ports that always-wired travelers want these days.

Then on Day 2, when it arrives at Grand Bahama Island, you disembark with your luggage. After your stay at the resort on the island, you get back on the ship to sail back to the Port of Palm Beach. Head to Florida's Port of Palm Beach to board the 10-deck ship Margaritaville at Sea Paradise.

While closed-loop cruises, where you embark and disembark in the U.S., allow you to sail with a birth certificate instead of a passport, we recommend the latter. A lot of people on this cruise only had birth certificates, and so were subject to longer lines at the terminal, both coming and going. On these two-day sailings, the ship draws a diverse passenger base that goes far beyond Jimmy Buffett fans, reaching all ages and demographics.

But I can also see where having too much Buffett make alienate newer cruisers and -- let's face it -- younger and more diverse passengers. The classic Buffett audience is aging; Jimmy's songs may seem timeless, but most were released in the 1970s. Far smarter to focus on margaritas and parrots and palm trees, and keep the yacht rock to a minimum. Passengers who purchase the “Ultimate Paradise Pass,” will also get added benefits on board such as welcome amenities, and 10% discounts on upgrades and onshore excursions. The pass is valid for use of a double-occupancy ocean view or inside stateroom, and includes a guest fare. The pass does not include taxes, fees, or port expense for the pass holder or guest.

The affordable pricing is partially due to the cruise's short itinerary length (2-nights, 3-days). It's a great option for anyone who wants a quick getaway that disembarks and returns to an easy-to-get-to port. Myriad dining, bar, and entertainment options are on board for you to enjoy during your short but significant cruise. There are plenty of places to throw back a few drinks, whether coffee or cocktails, and be entertained. This hotel is also near dining and shopping. The airport shuttle was the reason I booked there. The bonus was all the restaurants and shopping in walking distance.
